Inspired by so-called "balanced journalism", where two opposing points of view are presented, all within a narrow set of parameters and with no documentary evidence that either view is correct. So if "she says" two plus two is six, and "he says" two plus two is eight, the answer must be somewhere in between, so two plus two must equal seven. Newspapers used to be more partisan and wear their bias openly, but realised they could capture a far bigger audience, and share of advertising, if they presented themselves as neutral.

That’s what they would say, very much as their critics say. For example, I don’t try to hide my commitments, and the Washington Post and New York Times shouldn’t do it either.
